Search close before searching far
A frightened cat may remain silent and hidden close to the escape point. Search slowly and repeatedly rather than assuming the cat has travelled far.
- Check under vehicles, decks, stairs and dense shrubs.
- Ask neighbours to physically inspect garages, sheds and storerooms.
- Look up as well as down: walls, roofs and trees can become refuge points.
Use the quiet hours
Search after dusk or before dawn when traffic and human activity are lower. Use a torch held low so reflected eye-shine is easier to notice.
- Pause often and listen for movement or soft vocalisation.
- Call gently, then remain silent for a full minute.
- Take familiar food and a secure carrier.
Recover without causing another flight
Do not rush at a frightened cat. Sit lower, turn slightly sideways, speak quietly and allow the cat to recognise you. Prepare a closed room or secure carrier before attempting recovery.
